What is Handigolf?

Handigolfers are usually wheelchair users and so play all their shots, including putting, whilst seated on a special buggy. This has been the case since 1988.

The basics

What is Handigolf and how do Handigolfers play golf?

The Handigolf Foundation has been set up as a registered charity that operates as a nationwide golfing society to promote the game for disabled players.

Full size golf courses are used and play is under the A Modification of the Rules of Golf for Golfers with Disabilities, approved by The R&A.

With use of full size golf courses there are only minor checks needed to ensure that a fair test of golf can be achieved for all players involved.

The “Handicap” system used in amateur golf is ideal for the inclusion of disabled players and integration with able-bodied players is very easy to achieve.

The costs, and how to approach golf clubs

In the first instance it is best to join The Handigolf Foundation for £30 per annum. This includes golf liability insurance for you and your buggy.

Buggies cost £300 to hire in the first year. If you play in one Handigolf competition in a season the following year it reduces to £150. That’s £3 a week to play golf.

Clubs

There are several ways to swing a club, from the buggy’s swivel seat and we recognise that all players are different.

However standard clubs are ok and graphite shafted hybrid or rescue clubs are ideal.

The Patterson Eventer

The most recent buggy is the Patterson Eventer that can be transported whole on a trailer or dismantled into the back of a hatchback car.

You need permission to drive this type of buggy onto the greens and we can help with this.

However take this leaflet to your preferable golf club and explain that the Ground Pressure is less than a mower or a person with golf shoes on because of the wide wheels.

Where Handigolfers compete

The golfing season in the UK is mainly April to October and several tournaments are played throughout. The National Championships rotate on an annual basis between the North and South of England.
